PIO PIO.

—-© Own Correspondent

An ambulance class was established at Pio Pio some months ago and instruction has been given by Dr McLeod whose-services have been freely placed at the disposal of the class. Three weeks ago Dr Mcßae examined those who wished to qualify and word has been received that all have passed with credit. The following ladies passed: Misses Ross, Burrows, Churcher, Towler, Mesdames J. Cleaver, C. McDonald, C. E. Hobson and G. Neilson. Gentlemen: Messrs H. Rair.ger, A. Saville, Garner Bevege, W. Johnson junr., and C. B. Hobson. The letter conveying the results compliments the candidates on the standard of their work. Mr J. Smith donated prize to the lady and gentleman securing most points in the examination, and these were won by Mr and Mrs Hobson. A number who had attended the classes were unable to sit for examination, but an opportunity will be afforded them later. An example of the usefulness of a knowledge of ambulance work was afforded by an incident which occurred at Auckland recently. Mr Chesham, of Pio Pio, was in Auckland and was present when one of the victims of a drowning accident was brought ashore. Among the large crowd present Mr Chesham was the only one who volunteered to apply first aid measures pending the arrival of a doctor. Dairying has been successful in the district during the past season and preparations are now in hand for opening the new season. The local factory paid out a bonus of ,;d at the close of the season, which brings the amount paid out for butter fat during the season to per lb. This must be considered a very satisfactory result for the year's working and with conditions improving every year the benefit to the district will lie made manifest in no uncertain manner. The main road is cutting up badly in places, the holes at the six and seven mile pegs being extremely bad. It is to be hoped steps will be taken to provide for the proper maintenance of the road during the coming season or it will shortly become impassable.
