FOOTBALL.
The game for the Kanfurly Shield on Saturday between Auckland and Taranaki at Auckland provided a creat contest, the Taranaki players eventually proving victorious by 14 points to 11. The game is said to have been one of the most open and exciting; that has been witnessed on the ground and the enthusiasm at the finish when it was realised that the butter province had won the Shield was trejaendous. For the winners Dewar scored two tries, Roberts and Loveridga being responsible for a try apiece, while Hawkins kicked the solitary goal. The visiting forwards early showed that they were a very dashing lot, and they had just a bit the best of things throughout the game. The pace was on from start to finish'and they|severely taxed the Auckland defence, by sweeping down the field with the ball at too. The Auckland vanguard failed to rise to the occasion, and the first time or years the spectators were treated to the experience of seeing the* Auckland forwards DUtplayed. Only for a time about half-way through (she second spell did the local forwards, show up well and during that period the side scored two tries. The visitors,\ however, Were not to be denied and came again towards the finish. The Shield goes to Taranaki with the good wishes of all true sports that its possession will be successfully defended for some years to j'coroe. Auckland has held possession of the coveted trophy :tor so long that the task of lifting it appeared to be nearly hopeless, and if ever a province deserved to win the highest honours in the football world
the butter province has been meeting I the best in f'lhe land on the football j field and holding its own despii" oh- ! vious disadvantages. The possession i of the badge of supremacy in the j Rugby world of the Dominion is a i fitting crown to such a line record j as Taranaki possesses. J j ( j | [ j j ' : ' ■ ,
