With the conclusion of the Chiistchurch Grand National meeting the winter racing for the season will be brought to a close, and all eyes will be focussed on the earlier spring meeting. In the Auckland district the first meeting to attract attention is that of the Avondale Jockey Club, and a great amount of interest is always centred in the suburban gathering. The fact that the first of the local classics are decided at the meeting contributes largely to the interest. The two year olds get their first public gallop, while the three year old classic in the shape of the Guineas is always a good indication as to the three year old form. This year the two year olds are said to be a promising lot while the Guineas candidates which include the consistent Merry Roe and others are well up to the average. ° During the past season the principal winning owners on the New Zealand turf were:—Sir George Clifford £SOOS .lfls, Messrs W. G. and, G. L. Stead ,£7257, T. H. Lowry £5970, F Hall £5850, E. J. Watt £5475, J. IS. Reid £3830. Bon Reve headed the list of winning horses during the past racing season, with £3742 10s, to his credit., and then came Bobiikoff £2925. The six leading sires were: —Soult 48 ra£es won, £20,685; Birkenhead 39, £8956; Martian 22, £7207; Boniform 9, £7032; Charlemagne 22, £6108; Treadmill 13, £5791.
Multiply, says a Gisborne message, re-ently got tangled up in a barb wire fen e and cut himself about somewhat severely. This accounts for the absence of the son of Multifid from the C.J.C. acceptances. The jumpers Waitarere, Waione, and Paw a have been sent home to Levin, and are not to be raced again this season. North East, who will be ridden by W. Young in the National Hurdles tomorrow, has been .jumping well. FOOTBALL. The game for ihe Ranfurly Shield between Auckland and Poverty Bay on Saturday, resulted in a somewhat easy win for the Auckland representatives, the score at the finish rcadinp:--Aiick-larul 27, Poverty Bay A feature of the game was the plane-kicking of O'Leary, the Auckland iul!-baek. who converted three tries and kicked ihree penalty goai?. ihe visitors' only score was a penalty goal kicked by Tait. it is not often that the smaller unions have ago for the shield, and notwithstanding the defeat of Poverty Bay, it is to be hoped ihe example will be followed by other country unions. The class of football played in the country is usually not so finished as t!»at of city players and the best means to improve the. standard is by j meeting the highest class in the game. Moreover the opportunities or meeting 1 first class teams arc so rare that country players fail to do ; iieinsel ves justice in a big game. it is to be hoped the country unions will do their utmost to fester games eetveon Uis subunions with a view to representative games against the metropolitan players. With the rieiinito objective of playing Sheild matches the country plavers would have a greater inducement to train systematically, an 3 the experience gained in (ho representative contests would improve the standard of play immensely. The next contest 'Y«r the Kanfurly Shield will he on Saturday next, when Taranaki will draw swords with Auckland. A keen game is expected. Tiie representative Northern Onion game between Auckland and Canterbury on Saturday resulted in a win for Auckland by 48 points to l'J. The winners are credited with playing a brilliant game, and should give a good account of themselves against the New South Wales representatives when they meet. The Rugby championship of Wellington has been won this year by the Athletic Club. In the Wairarapa Carterton have, again won the position of champion club, while teilding won the championship of Manawatu. The Dunedin premiership was wen by the Zingari club.
