A MAGNIFICENT GIFT.

The Countess of Carlisle has pre- j sented seven valuable pictures from j the Howard collection to the National | Gallery, including Carracki'= three j Marie's, purchased in IT'.'e' from (he Orleans' collection for four thousand guinea?, and Gainsborough's unfinished portrait of Mistress Graham. TaTedTgtoryT" MR D. MITCHELL. A very pleasant function, organised by the fellow employees and friends of Mr D. Mitchell, was held on Wednesday evening in the sample rooms of Messrs Hattaway and Fitzpatrick. Mr Mitchell, who has been for some year? assistant-stationmaster at To Kuiti, had received notice o;' his transfer and the gathering was organised to bid farewell to Mr Mitchell. The chair was occupied by Mr F- Langstone, and representatives of Te Kuiti Football Club in addition to the" railway stall' and others were present. During the evening Mr Mitchell waa presented with a handsome travellingbag and rug, the presentation being made hv Mr Gilford, stationmaster, who sp'oke highly,; of the recipient both as a sportsman and a workman. Mr Mitchell suitably responded. The health of the guest was drunk with musical honours, and a number of other toasts were honoured. Songs were rendered by .Messrs Jepsou, Crean, Mitchell and others, and the gathering broke up about midnight.
