COMMERCIAL.

Newton King reports:— On Wednesday, 16th inst., for Mr P. H. E. Surrey's pedigree sale at my Waiwakaiho yards, I bad a good and representative attendance from all parts of the dißtrict and Rangitikei. Competition opened slowly, but improved as the sale progressed, and prices on the whole were very satisfactory. The cows sold a good deal cheaper than the heifers, which made excellent prices. The many bulls were looking- rough and were rather on the small side, and considering the unfavourable conidtions sold at very satisfactory prices. The highest prices were for cow "Vega Tincy," to Mi E. Long, Manaia, 71gns; cowe'Sheila," to Mr L. G. Andrews. Bell Block, 67gns; heifer "Vesta's Campanile," to Mr W. R. Butler, Manaia, G2gnß; cow "White Carnation," to Mr H. Stratford, Palmerston North, GOgns. The 38 pedigree cows averaged 33gns, and the seven pedigree heifers averaged 41gns, Pedigree bulls from 8 to 20gns. At Huiroa, on Thursday, 17th inst., I held a sale of pedigree and grade cattle on account of Mr D. Watkin. Th*j stock was all in good condition, both pedigree and grades showing lots of quality and were coiuider- ! ahly above the average. Prices for j the pedigree cattle were not quite up j to expectations and were in favour of buyers. The 16 grade cows which wero a particularly fine lot made from £9 to £23, with an averßge of £34 10s. Prices for the pedigree cattle were as follows: —"Marigold II.," to Mr H. Stratford, 29gns; "Mistletoe," to Mr A. E. Watkins, GOgns; "Palm," to Mr H. B. Lepper, 22gns; "Park Queen," to Mr J. R. Colson. 3gns; "British," to Mr A. E. Watkins, 37gns; "Riverlea Lass," to , A. E. Watkins, 50gns. Heifers, "Indian Queen," to Mr H. J. Ambury, 50gns; "Signal Queen," to Mr John Hale, 26gnn; "Signal Lass," to Mr John Hale, 22£gns. Pedigree Berkshire sows, 2 to 6Jgns; pedigree Berk- j shire boars, 2to 2£gns; store pigs, 20s 6d. The 40 cows offered on account of Mr W. Phillips, were a really good line, selling very readily from £5 30b to £ls 10s, this herd averaging just £lO. LONDON PRODUCE MARKETS.

HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLEGRAM. Wellington, Monday. The High Commissioner's cable, dated London, July 19tb, is as follows, quotations, unless otherwise specified, are average market prices on spot:— Mutton. —The market is a shade weaker and prices have declined £d for lightweight from Canterbury, and l-16d for all gradeß of North Island mutton. Canterbury 4 5-16 d, lightweight 4%d, North Island, 4 3-16 d. Lamb.—The market is weak and Jjiiceß have declined. Canterbury, two's 5 11-16 d; heavyweights; unchanged at 4£d, other than Canterbury s£d. Beef. —The market is firm, no change in prices. Chilled Beef. —Hindquarters, 3Jd; fores, 3£d. Butter. —The market ifl dull and the demand slow, but no change is reported in prices. Cheese. —The market is quiet for New Zealand, and trade is slow for Canadian. New Zealand white 66s 6d, coloured 65s 6d; Canadian, finest white and coloured 64s 6d. g Hemp.—The market is quiet, but steady, with increasing demand for better grades of Manila, and for that the market is firmer. New Zealand, good, fair grade, £29 nominal, fair £24 los; fair current Manila £29 10s; forward shipment of New Zealand, good fair £29 10s. fair, £25; fair current Manila, £29 10s. The output from Manila for the week was 19,000 bales. The Farmers' Co-operative Auctioneering Co., Ltd., report:— MATAMATA SALE. On July 16th we held our usual Matamata stock sale, when we had a particularly large eitry, comprising 4866 sheep, 8815 fat 'and store catlte, 524 dairy cows and heifers, and 30 pigs. Competition was keen for all stock, and practically the whole yarding was disposed of at exceptionally good priceß. We qwote: —Weaner pigs 9s to 21s, sows £4 10s, fat wethers 20s to 24s 3d, fat ewes 17s to 19s 9d, store ewes 13s, Woolly hoggets 14s lOd, fat cows £s> 5s to £7 ss, fat steers £9 4s to £ll 2b, rising 2 year steers £4 5s to £4 7s 2d, to ?,% year store steers £4 10s to £4 17s, 3 year fresh steers off turnips £7 to £7 ss, store cows £3 5s to £3 15s, rising 2 year empty heifers £3 7s 6d to £3 15s, rising yearling heifers £2 15a t) £3 ss, mixed yearlings £2 15s to £3, smaller sorts £2 to £2 10s, best dairy heifers £7 to £9 ss, medium sorts £5 15s to £6 10s, backward and smaller heifers £4 15s to £5 ss, best dairy cows £6 to £7 10s, others £4 15s to £5 10s. HAMILTON SALE. At Hamilton on July 17th, we' had a yarding of 1834 sheep, 529 cattle, and 46 pigs. All clases were required competition being keen. Pigs were at extreme prices. Small weaners 10s to 15s, slips and small porkers £2 to £3 lis, heavy fat wethers 25i to 28s Id, fat and forward wethers 20s to 22?, fat hoggets 18s 9d, fat ewes 15s 6rl to 18s 9d, ewes in lamb 13s 6d to 15s 9d, store wethers 14s to 17s 4d, store hoggets 13s 6d, heavy fat steers £l2 7s 6d to £l3 10s, medium weight well-fattened Bteers £9 17s to £ll 2s 6d, small fat eteera £9 2s, heavy fat cows £7 15s to £lO, light and medium fattened cows £5 5s to £6 ss, store to fresh cows £4 to £4 10s, rising 2 year steers £4 2s, rising yearling •iteers and heifers £2 10s to £3 sb, smaller 35b to 455. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., report:— HAMILTON DAIRY COW SALE.

Seventy cows. <mi account of Mr J. Houston averaged £7 9s 9d, selling at from £6 10s to £l2, forty on account of Mr G. Kearns £9 at from £7 15s to £l4 10s, fifteen cows on account Mr H. Wellington £9 10s 3d from £8 2s Gd to £lO sb, 31 cows and heifers on account of Mr C. E. Faear £7 8s 9d from £5 15s to £lu 10s.
