ROTORUA BEATS MANIAPOTO.
With an ideal day for football quite 500 people were present to witness the Rotorua-Maniapoto match at Rotorua last Saturday Th« wind was puffy and the sun glaring. Maniapoto won the toss and elected to play against the wind, and thua avoid the sun. Rotorua set the ball in :notion, and some exchange kicking took place, the ball going >ut. Rotorua were afterwards awarded a free kick and Rogers missed badly. _ The visitors then got into the local 25 and Rotorua seamed slightly disorganised, but only temporarily, and after Purcell missing badly Rotorua were soon ses" attacking. H. Rogers was the first to handle the bail and Tapiri, G. Rogers and Purcell were sent away, but were stopped by Maniapoto. A scrum sav? Maniapoto again get the | ball, but Rotorua forwards were on ' their backs and another scrum took place in front of the visitors goal, here they were penalised and Rogers, taking a kick, missed the foal. Soon after Rotorua made another attack and Maniapoto forced. From the kick Rothwell returned nicely and L. Mitchell missnd. Boles, who followed up, got possession, but Purcell collared his man nicely. The visitors were then awarded a free kick and some nice exchange kicks took place the local men gaining he advantage. McDecmott, Vercoe and Purcell were then seen in a passing rush. The visitors were penalised and Vercoe landed a goal— i
Rotorua ••• Maniapoto ... 0 Roger 3 was the next to make a dash, and was seen taking the ball up the field at a great rate, but Matthews collared his man and saved what appeared to be a certain try. The visitors then made a determined rush, but when rearing the local line Rogers intercepted and saved. Vercoe shortly after fell over the line but lo3t the ball. The next noticeable incident was when Purcell took a pass in the opening and making a short kick, Tapiri aecared and Bcored a try. Tuoro missed at goal Rotorua ••• Maniapoto ... 0 A scrum followed and Maniapoto got possession, but on being-penalised, Rotorua got away, headed by Mitchell, and Tapiri. and Rogers getting the ball in turn. Bringing the ball across the field Purcell was seen in possession and after making a pretty run, kicked short. Rene missed at full and Purcell scored. The kick failed — Rotorua ••• ® Maniapoto ... 0 The balance of this Bpell consisted of scrum work and short runs by the local three-quarter line, none of which ended in success. No further score was registered. The sesond spell opened with several well-judged exchange kicks, after which the ball went out at half-way. From this on the game was fast, and Rotorua were handling the ball in real good style. Vercoe secured and made a long pass to Rogers, but Boles intercepted and prevented a try. From a scrum at the 25 play Rotorua secured the ball coming out to Mitchell, who transferred to Rog3i'3, who made a pretty to near Maniapoto's line, where he transferred to Clarke, who scored. Rotorua got ont of danger, and the backs were again seen doing some fine passing After making ground L . Mitchell passed to Rogers, who transferred to Purcell, who scored a pretty try. A free kick for Maniapoto flaw Boles making a kick, but missed the goal. An infringement on'the part of a local man a few minutes later, the same player landed a good goal and scored the first points for the visitors: Rotorua ••• 15 Manipaoto ... 3 This put new energy into the visitors, who made an attack, but only to be sent back by the home team. Walker was in possession, and Vercoe secured and centred. Tapiri, Rogers and Clarke were together in a run and on the latter being collared some excitng play followed in the visitors' territory. Mitchell passed out nicely to Tapiri, who transferred to Rogers, who sent it on to Clarke, who scored. Purcell missed the goal.— Rotorua ••• 18 Maniapoto ... 3 Rotorua forwards then livened and McDermott, Melville, Purcell and Emery were doing good work. Their rush ended in Mitchell securing and passing out. The local men were again seen doing a passing run. Then Maniapoto coming up the field at a good bat, kicked too far and Rotorua forced. Delaney marking in the 25, Boles had a shot at goal but missed. Nearing the end things became slightly disorganised and Maniapoto, who were being hard pressed, got away with a forward rush. With only Purcell and Tuoro to pass, the latter attempted to kick a rollng ball and missed. The ball went on to Purcell, but in his attempt to kick sent the ball back and Hurley pounced on it and scored. Boles landed a good goal on the call of time— Rotorua ... 18 Maniapoto ... 8 Mr K. J. Rennie, Rotorua, controlled the game.
The following referees have been appointed for next Saturday's fixtures :—Te Kuiti v. Mangapehi, Mr P. Mora; Ongarue v. Otorohanga, Mr Rothery; Waimiha v. Nehenehe, Mr Lusk. The matches will be played on the ground of the Brat mentioned teams. The junior fitxurea are as follows: — Otorohanga B v. Te Kuiti, at Te Kuiti, to start at 1 p.m. sharp,Mr P. Mora; Nehenehe v. Otorohanga A, at Otorohanga, Mr Verner.
