HIGH COMMISSIONER'S WORK.
SIR W. HALL-JONES' OPINION. FAVOURS NATIONAL TRAINING. [nv TKLK^AI'H.—rUh/SS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, This Day. Sir William Hall-Jone?, speaking at lucheon tendered to him by the New Zealand Club, detailed a number of important events which occurred during his term of office. Ho said great enthusiasm was created in England at New Zealand's gift Dreadnought. Referring to the national training system here, he said something similar would have to be done in England. Such a scheme would prevent ships of the navy from being continually tied up at particular points in order to prevent invasion. Referring to the anti-militarist attitude, he said if there were men here who were not prepared to protect their mother i and wives from a foreign foe, he would gladly contribute his share in assisting them to leave the country. Referring to the meat question, he expressed the opinion that France offered the best opportunity for the extension of our market in this direction. Touching on immigration, the speaker said New Zealand could take many more immigrants, not only farm hands, but tradesmen also. The domestic help problem was just as keen in England as here. Sir William HallJones complained of the paucity of the allowance for advertising purposes as contrasted with what was done by Australia and Canada.
