CONSTABLE SMYTH'S DISMISSAL.

Ilerdnirn, interviewed in reference lo the dismissal of exConstable Smyth, stated n complaint had been received by the Greymouth police that timber had been disappearing from the trucks en the wharf. Smyth was specially instructed to watch the trucks and .report to flic sergeant at !"> a.m. The constable, without any satisfactory reason, left his beat between .'! and 4 o'clock - , and was found at, the station by Ihe senior sergeant. The latter examined the book :i,nd noticed Smyth had signed oil' at It a.m. When questioned Smylh pleaded he did not know the time. The senior sergeant had ridiculed the suggestion that Smyth when he came oil" bin beat did not look at the station clock, and the striking of the town clock was quite audible.
