THE BYE-ELECTION.

CANDIDATES FOR GREY. The bye-election rendered necessary by the death of Sir Arthur Guinness will probably take place between three and four weeks from date. As soon as the Clerk of the House receives official intimation of the vacancy he will take steps to have the writ issued, and this is returnable within twenty-one days. At last election the Grey seat was contested by M P. C. Webb, who stood in the Labour interests, and polled 2,502 votes against 3,528 polled by Sir Arthur Guinness. It is considered likely the contest will again be between the Liberal and Labour repreesntaie. The Labour candidate will probably be Mr Webb or Mr Semple, while the names of likely aspirants representing the Liberal interests are Mr M. Hannan, a solicitor, of Greymouth, who contested the seat in 1889 against Sir Arthur Guinness, Mr H. L. Michel, who contested the Westland seat against Mr T. Y. S<=ddon, and Mr E. Perkins, Mayor of >vvmouth,

MR HANNAN TO STAND. GOOD CANDIDATE WANTED. Greymouth, Saturday. Mr M. Hanoan has decided to contest the bye-election as Liberal candidate. At a small meeting of Reformers Mr Herdman gave an address, and stated Government candidate must be found. The meeting uanimously requested Mr H. L. Michel to allow himself to be nominated, but he is not inclined to accept, and is taking time to consider the request.
