ARIA.

, Own """"■"~kTHE MAIN* ROAD. £§£« £A meeting of those interested in the metalling of tne main road from Pio Pio to Aria was held in the Aria Hall last Friday, convened by Mr Murdock McKenzie. When Mr Massey. the Prime Minister, visited these parts a deputation consisting of Messrs Collinn and Petrie waited on him re the metalling of this road, and asked that as "a stitch in time" a small straight-out grant should be made a once to repair certain bad portions that the coach and ordinary traffic might have a chance thi<3 winter. The wishes in this respect were a once acceded to, but there has been some neglect in putting the work in hand, and golden time has been lost. After being reminded, a wire came through the other day from Mr Massey to say £240 was to be spent at once. Mr Murdock McKenzie was voted to the chair, and explained that the object of the meeting was to push on the metalling of the entire Btretch, and to act on the very encouraging remarks of Mr Massey when through this* way, who had enquired the total cost, and said in reply that the Government were going to place on the Estimates a large sum for bacbblock roads, and that this road would have attention next summer. Mr J. O'Sullivan said he did not believe in piece-meal work. One job should be made of it. It was then pointed out that what was about to be done now was really "a stitch in time." Mr F. Smyth moved that a petition be circulated for signatures praying for attention to this road, and that it should be sent to Wellington, backed up by a deputaion. Mr Collins seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously. Mr Collins proposed that a committee be set up to draw up the petitijn and circulate it for signatures. Mr S. Riddle seconded thj motion, which was carried. The following committee was elected-.—Messrs M. McKenzie, R. H. McKenzie, S. Riddle, C. J. Riddle, J. Collins, G. Nelson, W. Keighley, D. C. McDonald, F. Davidson, and G. Petrie. Mr P. Smyth proposed, and Mr A. R. Keighley seconded that the Government be asked to proclaim the road from Pio Pio to Aria a main road. —Carried. A vote of thanks to the chair brought the meeting to a close. At a subsequent commitee meeting held, Mr Collins was elected chairman, and Mr G. Petrie secretary. It was resolved to meet again next Friday, the 6tb inst., at 11 p.m.
