WANGANUI LIBEL CASE.
£IOO DAMAGES AWARDED. [nY TKLKGKAI'II. —I'K.KSS ASSOCIATION.] Wanganui, Saturday. At the Supreme Court yesterday a case was heard in which Alfred Stubbs claimed from the Wanganui Chronicle £5Ol damages for alleged libel contained in reference to a case mentioned among others in an historical conclusion to an article describing the alterations to the local courthouse. The alleged libel was in tho word "Publican who did to death an old Maori who used to dress in women's clothes." It transpired the person referred to was Stubbs, who kept the hotel 27 years ago. It appears the Maori was drinking in Stubbs' hotel at the time the trouble occurred and Stubbs threw him out. A few days later the Maori died. Stubbs was eventually charged with manslaughter, but the magistrate dismissed the case on the ground of conflicting evidence as to the force used.
The Chronicle offered to apologise for the mistake and pay £s(l compensation, but the case went before a jury, which awarded £IOO damages?.
