HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLEGRAM. Wellington, Monday. The High Commissioner's cablegram, dated London, May 31, is as follows (quotations, unless otherwise specified, are average market prices on spot): — Mutton.—The market is firm, with good demand for prime quality. Holders are firm. There has been a better tone in the market this week. Can-: terbury 4Ad, North Island 4Jd. Lamb. —The market is weaker and slightly lower, but high prices are still restricting business in the market. Arrivals are very heavy. Canterbury 6|d, other than Canterbury 6d. Beef.—The market is depressed. Supplies of American chilled beef are small. The weather lately has been unfavourable for the sale of beef. Chilled is selling at lower prices than frozen, Stocks of New Zealand beef on hand are light. New Zealand hindquarters 31d. fores 3£d, chilled hinds 4d, foras 2£d. Butter—The market is quiet but steady, except for New Zealand, of which the supply is practicaily exhausted. The market is firmer to the Tainui accident. Choicest New Zealand 115s, Danish 115s, Australian 106s, Siberian 100s, Argentine 102s. Cheese.—The market is firm, with improved demands, and holders are not anxious to sell. New Zealand white 61s, coloured 595.

Hemp.—The market is depressed. There is a speculative decline, caused by the absence of manufacturers. New Zealand good, fair, £3O; fair, £26 10s (prices nominal); forward shipments of fair current Manila, £3l. The output from Manila for the week was 21,000 bales. Wool. —The market remains firm. Current Bradford quotations of tops are: 36's, low crossbreds, Is 4d per lb; 40's, Is 4*3; 44's, medium crossbreds, Is 5Jd; 50's, halfbreds, Is 9d; 56s', quarterbreds, 2s; 60's, merinos, 2s sid.
