DOES GERMANY WANT TO FIGHT?

This is the very important question that is asked and answered in the June number issue of "Life," just published. The cover design is from a photograph taken on board H.M.S. New Zealand, while she was in Mel bourne recently, and shows the battleship's mascot bulldog asleep in the mouth of one of the great 12-inch guns, whilst a great black cat slumbers serenely on top of the gun's rim. The suggestion, of course, is that the bulldog's attitude represents that of Great Britain, but Mr Carlyle Smythe, who writes the article in question, convinces us that the bulldog is not quite so slumberous as he seems, and that if anything happens he will be at the other end of the gun. Mr Smythe writes from an intimate knowledge of German affairs, and his explanation of the international situation is most illuminating. Another important contribution to this June number of "Life" is an article by T. K. Dow, the well-known agriculturist, who proves that ostriches may be farmed with considerable profit in Australia; and we can see no earthly reason why the same should not apply to New Zealand, providing conditions can be found to favour the birds. There are also several wonderfully interesting character sketches of the Antarctic heroes, and a useful article on "Araon as a Business," of special worth to insurance men. On the lighter side, there is an excellent story for business men by the creator of Pete Crowther, who stands for the ideal salesman; a stirring exciting fiction, and a finely tempered sketch of life in the Australian hill country. The departments of "Life" are a up-to-date, bright, and popular as usual, and we can but recommend anew to our readers this vital, valuable, Australasian magazine, which may be had from the local book3eller, or direct from the publishing house of T.
