An enthusiastic meeting of settlers was held in the school house on 19th inst. Mr Randall, who presided, explained -"hat the object of the meeting was to ascertain the needs of the district so that their wants might be brought before the member for the district, Mr J. A. Young, who was expected at Te Rauamoa next day. On the motion of Mr French, secondad by Mr Ln Frow, it was resolved that this meeting of settlers is of opinion that all reserves in this district be thrown open for selection under the optional tenure, as these reserves were a menace to settlement. Mr French stated that a reserve, Section 10, block 10, Hauturu road, between his farm and Mr Le Prow, was an obstacle to settlement, This was confirmed by Mr Le Prow, Mr Ran dall referred to a 50-acre reserve at the junction of Kahi and Hauturu roads. Mr Honore referred to a 150acre reserve at the junction of Pirongia West and the main coach roads. All these reserves were unimproved. Settlers could not ring fence their holdings. On the motion of Mr Smith, seconded bv Mr Randall, it was resolved that the Tupahunaku block, comprising about 3000 acres of unimproved Crown land, facing Hauturu, Omaru, and extending to Kaimango and Kahi road, be immediately thruwn open for selection under the optional tenuce. —Carried.
On the motion oil Mr 0. Dassler, seconded by Mr Le Prow, it was resolved that this public meeting of settlers prcsts against the wholesale speculation in native land in this district, and urges upon the Government the advisability of compelling lessees to improve their lands before disposal of same. Unimproved blocks in this dstrict were Hikuratigi block of 900 acres, blocks on the main coach read east of Te Rauamoa, and on Otoro hanga road of 400 acres, 140 acres, 600 acres, and 190 acres had been dealt with and re-sold, and not a periny worth of improvements had been dealt with and effected.
Proposed by Messrs Le Prow and Randall, that the main coach road from le Rauamoa to Oparau be metalled.
Proposed by Messrs Smith and French that the portion of main coach road between Ngutunui bridge and the terminus of the present metalled road be metalled.
The advantages of belonging to the Farmers' Union were discussed and it was resolved that a branch of the Farmers' Union be formed . at Te Raua-
in 03. Mr Randall was appointed chairman and Mr Honore secretary. It wasi resolved that the secretary write for particulars a. an early date.
