AMERICA'S WOOL DUTIES.

s♦«-$> The fact that the United Stateß House of Representatives haß passed the measure introduced by the Democratic party with the object of removing the duty on wool will be widely welcomed by both tho Australian and New Zealand wool growers. Notwithstanding that a reduction of wool duties wan inevitable sooner or later the vested interests in tho United States have been sufficiently strong to withstand all attacks on the tariff hitherto. However the policy advocated by Mr Woodrow Wilson in his presidential campaign has evidently found sufficient public favour to permit the removal of the duty on wool. On tho face of things tho throwing open of the American market to tho outside

wool growers must mean a considerable increase in the price of the wool which is moat commonly grown, and it is in this respect that the Dominion should benefit. Even if the cherished dreams of the wool growers are not reailaed to the fullest extent, the expansion of the present market must have a considerable effect. Possibly one of the greatest benefits, in addition to the enhanced value in the country's exports, will lie in the fact that with such a widespread market the tendency to a sudden fall in price will bo at least partially obviated, and growers will have a steadier demand for their produce. A little time will be required to feel the effect of the removal of the tariff barrier which has existed for such a lengthy period, but there can bo no dobut that whatever benefits will accrue, to the public of the United States in consequence of the adoption of the Democratic policy, tho benefits to New Zealand and Australian wool growers will be very considerable.
