IMPROVED FARM SETTLEMENT.
SUPERVISION CHARGES. CONDEMNED BY PRIME MINISTER.
Considerable dissatisfaction has been occasioned at Tangitu by the supervision charges imposed upon the settlers by the Lands Department. According to the terms of settlement the settlers were entitled to draw in cash from the department up to the amount of £l5O and a further £SO for house allowance. From this amount was deducted seven and a half per cent, for supervision charges. This percentage was addpd to the capital value of the sections, and had to bear interest in the same manner as the amount drawn. The matter was brought before the notice of the* Prime Minister on Saturday last and Mr Massey told the settlers it was the first he had heard of supervision being charged against the settlers. He could not understand it as the supervision was done by an officer of the department. He was glad the matter had been mentioned, and be would make enquiries concerning it. Unfortunately the amount could not be refunded, but if there was an infliction it could be remedied. If the matter remained with the Lands Department he would cut it out. It seemed to him an exhorbitant charge and unfair.
