KAWHIA COUNTY COUNCIL.

ENGINEER'S REPORT. Since making my last report plans and specifications of Contracts No. 61, 62, and 63, Awaroa to Mahoeroad; 64, Taumatatotara East road; 24 and 26, Kawhia to Marokopa River road; and 65 and 66, Kaimango road have been approved by the district engineer. Tenders are now being invited for Contract No. 24, and the remainder of the above works have been in hand for Borne time.

Good progess has been made on all metalling works, and Messrs Eshelby and Swanson have both completed their contracts on Kawhia to Marokopa River road, thus completing the whole of the metalling for which the loan was raised. Both contractors have made good progress on the Okupata road, and Mr Stokes should easily complete the first three and half miles from Okupata stream bridge before winter. He has also procured his crushing plant and will shortly commence crushing operations at the Omanawa Btream. Messrß Davies and Schreiber Bros, have only about 70 or 80 chains of work to complete, and if favoured with good weather, and able to maintain present progress, should complete in about one month from date. The work on this contract still remains satisfactory. Mr F. Eshelby is making good progress on the Awaroa to Mahoe road and now has about 50 chains of the work almost completed. Similar progress is being made on the Kaimango and Taumatatotara East roads, and the work on Kihi road has also been commenced. Messrs Mitchell and Lankey now have about 3500 sup. ft. of timber pit sawn for the Whakapirau road bridges, and will complete the cutting of the whole of the timber in about two weeks. The work of building the yards at Lemon Point wharf has been completed excepting the hanging of the three gates whish are made and on the ground.

My assistant has been employed in making engineering survey of the Lemon Point to Te Maika road, and will shortly commence similar work on the Waitetuna to Aotea road. On completion of the Oparau stream bridge n about three weeks' time, Messrs Scott and Forsyth will complete the building of the sheds and jetties at Kiwi Bay, Te Maika, and Awaroa. I understand in regard to the latter that steps are to be provided in addition to the 3hed, which will be an extra on the contract, and will cost from £lO to £ls. I propose to have this work carried out while the shed is being built. G. GOULD, County Engineer.
