FOR SAFETY ON THE RAILWAYS.
There has been installed on one of the English railways a new system of signalling which, it is claimed, is the most perfect yet devised. The apparatus is connected to the signal, and consists of a magazine for holding detonators and a long arm which is controlled by the same mechanical agency as that which works the signal. Should a fog descend any one of the railway men can pull the lever which sets .the machine in operation. When the signal stands at danger as a train enters a section, the long arm picks a detonator from the magazine and lays it on the line. As soon as the signal is lowered and the train passes, the arm lifts the used detonator from the line, drops it into the magazine ; and places another live one in position. The magazine holds fifty detonators, and when the number falls to ten a shrill whistle is set up until the stock is replenished.
