MARKET AND PRICES.
HIGH COMMISSIONER'S WORE
In conversation with a representative of the Press in London as to the possibility of obtaining a wider knowledge regarding markets and prices, the High Commissioner said that before he left New Zealand he indicated that it would be of greater value to agriculturists were it possible to collect and tabulate statistics regarding the world's output of certain products and the capacity of the using and consuming people to abßorb such products, and what
rivalry had to be met. He hoped if he gets leisure'to folllow up that in England, in order, if possible, to give an indication to producers as to prospects regarding supplies and markets. He proposes also to investigate the causes leading to difference in price for certain commodities in various countries. The investigations would cover auch questions as tariffs, freight, etc., and would probably account in a measure for the disparity in prices for certain products in one country as against values of the same proin other countries. Undoubtedly in the past such knowledge has in a great degree been gathered by men specialising in certain trades, who have naturally üßed it for their own benefit and probably at times against the best interests of proJucers, and Mr Mackenzie thinks if it were pos sible for the present monopoly of knowledge to be generally enjoyed, undoubted benefits would accrue to those chiefly concerned.
