THE DAIRYING INDUSTRY.

A FAVOURABLE SEASON. NEXT SEASONS' PROSPECTS. A feature in connection with th 3 dairying industry in the district this season is the remarkably good supply to the factories during March. In the ordinary course of events there is a decided drop at that period, but this year the conditions evidently favoured the supp ier more than usual. The exceptionally favourable season from a weather point of view was no doubt responsible, and as an example of the effect of good conditions on cows the experience should be valuable. The sharp weather experienced during the past week will no doubt cneck the milk supply, but there is still ample feed throughout th 9 district. Even if frosts set in this month the majority of settlers will be in a good position to start the winter. There has been a really good autumn growth and both grass and forage crops are doing well. The majority of the autumn sown grass however, will require rain very shortly. The dairy farmers throughout the district are in a position to regard the future hopefully, and will be able to start next season with enhanced prospects. The prices paid for Sutter fat during the season have excellent, and there is every prospect of these being maintained. If they are improved by the time next season's arrangements are made the dairy farmer will be a man to be envied. An encouraging feature as far as the industry ifl concerned generally is the fact that metalled roads are being provided in many localites. It cannot fail to be noticed that in all districts where factories have been started the settlers have shown a keen desire for improved reading facilities. There is every chance that money will be available to carry the settlers' wishes into effect next season, and there should be no looking back once the roads are established.
