COMMERCIAL.
Newton King reports:— On April Ist at Stratford for my fortnightly cattle sale I had an entry of 800 head of cattle and 2300 sheep. Some very nice pens of forward and fat cows and weaners were yarded. Buyers were preaent from all parts of the district and from the King Country. Competition from the outset was good and improved further durirg the sale, keen bidding being obtained for most lines a very satisfactory clearance resulting. Prices obtained as follows: —Weaner Jersey heifers £2 5s to £2 16s, well grown grade weaner heifer 3 40s to 445, good grades 33s to 375, smaller 28s 6d to 31s, beat weaner steers 38s 6d to 40s, others 30s to 335, mixed weaners, best lines 34s to 38s 6d, small or lines containing bad coloured steers 22s 6d to 29s 6d, Jersey weaner steers 5s to 12s 6d, yearling steers £2 15s, 20 months steers £3 12s, two and a-half steers with some colour £4 13 6d, bulls £2 13s to £5 2s 6d, old cows 17s to 73s 6d, small store cows £2 5s to £2 17s, good store cows £3 4s 6d to £3 15s 6d, forward cows £4 Is to £4 15s 6d, fat cows, choice £6 12s 6d to £7, others £5 4s to £5 9s, line of fat maiden heifers £5 2s 6d, in-calf 20 months heifers £3 12s 6d to £4 12s 6d, 2th ewes 12s, 2th wethers 11a 4d both small lines, lambs 7s Id to 9s 6d, rams from 1 to 2igns. At Stony River on 2nd inst. I had a fair/entry of cattle and about 5100 lambs. The latter were in demand a small pen of 40 shorn lambs in forward condition realising 10s 3d and a j line of 470 were quitted at 9s 3d, a choice line of Jersey weaner heifers realised £3 15s, and a very keen competition was obtained for a fine pen of 20 Shorthorn weaner steers on account of Mr P. O'Sullivan, these being sold at £2 4s, other prices were: —Jersey Weaner heifers £3, grade weaner heifers 38s to 40s, small 235, weaner steers 32s 6d to 35s 6d, bad coloured 24*3, mixed weaners 33s 6d to 40s 6d, springing heifers £5, in-calf heifers 20 months £3 15s to £4 7s 6d, aged cows 41s, store cows £3 6s to £3 18s, fat cows £5 18s, good conditioned bulls £5 to £B. small £3 15s to £3 19s 6d, slip pigs 16s. The Farmers' Co-operative Auctioneering Company report: — At Ohaupo on April Ist, we held our usual catlte sale and a supple mentary sheep fair, when 550 head of cattle were penned and 5959 sheep. There was a really good enquiry for sheep, and with few exceptions all were sold. Fat ewes made 13s 3d to 14s sd, fat lambs 12s 9d to 14s 9d, forward woolly lambs 9s 6d to lis, good shorn lambs 9s to 9s 6d, the advertised f.f.m. ewes overland from Gisborne made 10s 6d to 13s 3d, store wethers 14s to 15s, aged cull ewes to 7s 6d, fresh three year steers £6 7s, well bred two and two and a half year steers £4 10s to £5 12s, eighteen month steers £3 10s to £4, best calves 37s 6d to 425, smaller 31s to 355. .At Te Kuiti on April 2nd we hßd a yarding of 774 head of cattle and 1600 sheep. The were all well bred steers two to three and a half years for which the demand was good. Very few were passed. The sheep were chiefly breeding ewes. There was a fair enuiry, and only three pens remained unsold. Fat ewes sold from 15s to 15a lOd, fat wethers 17s £d to 18s, f.f.m. breeding ewes of a good class lis 8d to 14s 6d, sound mouth ewes 9s to 10s 9d, aged cull ewes 7s, woolly lambs 8s 4d, heavy fat bullocks £lO to £lO 10s, light with fat steers £S Bs, fresh three and a half year steers £7 8s to £7 12s, fresh three year steers £6 to £6 lis, two and a half year well bred steers in good order £5 Is to £5 15s, two year steers £4 to £4 10s, eighteen months steers £3 15s to £4, fat cows and heifers £5 10s to £6 ss, dairy heifers in calf £4 15s, calves 36s to 50s. HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLEGRAM. The High Commissioner's cablegram, dated London," April sth, is as fellows, quotations unless otherwise specified are average market prices on spot: —■ Mutton.—The market is firm in anticipation of small arrivals. Canterbury 4Jd, North Island 4£d.
Lamb.—Market is very firm on account of small supply. Canterbury 6sd, other than Canterbury 6£d. Beef—The market i 3 firm for best quality, but limited in demand for poorer grades. Choicest New Zealand 117s, Australian and Argentine 108s, Dani3h 1255, Siberian 110s. Cheese. —The market is weaker, with tendency downwards. New Zealand 60s 6d, Canadian 64s 6d. Hemp.—The market is depressed and prices nominal at last quotations, viz., New Zealand fair grade £34, fair grade £3l; fair current Manila, £35; April to June, New Zealand good fair £34 10s, fair grade £3l 10a; fai r current Manila £34. The output from Manila for the week was 20,000 bales.
