CATHOLIC CHURCH BAZARR.
A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION
AUSPICIOUS OPENING NIGHT. The bazaar and sale of work under the auspices of the Te Kuiti Roman Catholic Church, for which preparations have been in train for some time, was opened on Thursday evening in Hetet's Hall. The opening ceremony was performed by Mr A. Scholes, chairman of the Waitomo County Council, who, in an appropriate speech, wished the promoters of the function every success in their worthy object. Mr Scholes' remarks were supported by Mr W. T. Jennings, who dwelt on the efforts of those concerned, and referred to the development which was taking place throughout the district. During the evening a brisk business was dons at all the stalls, and the display of goods in the various departments would have dene credit to a much larger centre than Te Kuiti. Guessing competitions and raffles lent variety to the evening, and some excellent instrumental and vocal items were rendered during the evening. The following were in charge of the various stalls:—Fancy work, Mesdames Walsh and Sowry and Misses White and Sheehan; plain, Mesdames Mora, Robertson, and Corban and Miss Gavan; lollies and flowers, Mrs Clarke and Misses Robertson; refreshments, Mesdames Cotter, Sheehan, and Kawe and Miss Mora; produce, Messrs P. Cotter, Dooley, Sheehan and Kawe. Great credit is due to tbe Ladies' Committee, consisting of Mesdames Walsh, R. Cotter, P. Cotter, Sowry, Rothery, Robertson, Mora and Corban, for the work of organisation, and these were ably assisted by many others. Messrs Jones, P. Cotter, Sheehan C. Reid, Mernin, Walsh and Wilson constituted a very efficient gentlemen's committee. A special word of commendation is due to Miss White for the able manner in which she carried out the secretarial duties, and to Mrs Sowry as treasurer.
Some idea of the success of the opening night may be obtained from the fact that an amount of over £4O was realised in the hall. In addition about £3O worth of art union tickets have been sold. This amount together with a sum of nearly £SO realised last night will form a substantial sum to go towards the Church debt extinction fund. The bazaar is to be open for three nights, concluding this evening.
