URGENT REQUIREMENTS.

On every occasion a fatality neceßsitating an inquiry occurs at Te Kuiti the lack of facilities to meot such cases is emphasised. For years past recommendations have been made to the Government with the object of having a coroner appointed at Te Kuiti, and for all the i.otico taken of ( the application the department dcal-gMtf ing with such affairs might have bcenWWl non-existent. The coroner for this district is stationed at To Awamutu and the loss of time consequent upon communicating with him concerning an inquest, besideß being distressing to the relatives of tho victim, is highly inconvenient to witnesses and others who may bo required to attend an inquiry. In the same connection the lack of a suitable morgue has long been felt. It is needless to dwell upon the reason* which make the provisions of such a building necessary. The dictates of humanity and decency demand that stops shall be taken to provide suitable accommodation for the bodies of those who meet an untimely end, and it is to be hoped that those whose duty it is to make such provision will take prompt steps to fulfill such an urgent requirement.

Mr J. R. Graham will hold a sale of horses on Saturday next. Those in want of a useful hack or harness horse will do well to attend this sale.

Over sixty nominations have been received for the chopping events at Tokirima sports, Ohura, to-morrow, including such well known performers as McCauley, West, Rodgers, Nash, Wood, Soffe, Apted, Hanley, Clark, Harris, and others.

It is the intention of the combined Te Kuiti and Mangaorino road Methodist Sunday schools to hold their first anniversary on Sunday, April 13th, to be followed by a t*a and public meeting on the Monday evening. Poller and further particulars will appear in later issues of this paper.

Next Saturday evening a meeting of the Sports Club will be held in the Chronicle office, at which all members are requested to attend. The business to be discussed is important and several matters of interest will be considered. A full muster is rsquested.

The Ohura residents are moving in the direction of forming a racing club and efforts are to be made to obtain a totalisator permit for the same. The committee of the Taranaki Jockey Club has passed a resolution affirming tbe expediency of the registration of the Ohura Club, providing a racecourse of not less than seven furlongs is provided. The application will come before the Racing Conference in July next.

The funeral of the late Mr Jas. G. Berry, senr , took place a Te Awamutu on Friday forenoon. There was a large attendance, many old settlers being present. The service was conducted by Rev. F. Clake, at the conclusion of which the Masonic service was read by the Wor.-Master of Lodge Alexandra, the deceased being an old member. The brethren of Lodge Alexandra attended in regalia.

The annual registered sports meeting to be held at Mangapehi on April 19th, promises to be even a greater success than those of previous years. Nominations are coming forward freely, and with Mr. H. Burbush as handicapper, some good finishes should result. Intending competitors are reminded that nominations close with the secretary. Mr B. W. Hayson, on April 10th. A good opportunity is offered to boys just leaving school by the local postal authorities. Boys over fourteen who have passed the fifth standard, or boys under fourteen who have obtained a proficiency certifi' eate can obtain employment as messenger boys at a salary commencing at £3l per annum. The opportunity iB an excellent one for smart boys who are desirous of entering the service.

The second annual meeting of the Ohura Sheep Dog Trial Club, held last week, was highly successful. Mr P. Goldfinch won two events with his dog Kitty, other events being won by Mr E. Anderson's Rough, and Mr J. McAvady's Fly. It is intended to provide a £SO gold cup for competition next year, and a substantial amount towards the fund has already been promised.

Okahukara station, which is to be the junction of the Main Trunk and Ohura linea of railway, is now a busy centre. The service road has been complßted and the traffic between the railway and Ohura, which in the past was over the Ongarue road, has now been diverted to the new and shorter route. At the last meeting of the Ohura County Council the following resolution bearing on the subject was passed :-That the Minister of Public Works be written to pointing out that ao provision has been made to instal a stationmaster at Okahukara junction or to erect a station and goods shed to enable settlers to take advantage of the new and shorter route from the raiiway.and urgently desiring him to take immediate steps to adjust the matter before winter.

Lord Haldane, speaking at the London University, said that the man in the street was unwilling to pay taxes for secondary education, because he regarded it as a luxury, but really a national danger lay in the fact that Britain was behind the level of several of her competitors. If industrial preeminence was to stand, the nation must link elementary, secondary, and university education.

The Dominion haa been subject to visitations of both five and flood of late, and considerable damage has resuled. Fortunately the fireß, which have been raging in the North Auckland and Gisborne districts, have been checked, good rain saving fallen in each district. The floods in the south are subsiding, but when the damage is estimated it is feared the amount will reach very large figures. fc Information has been gathered by ■by the Hon. Thomas Mackenzie, High ■Commissioner for New Zealand, that * 77 public institutions are advertising for meat supplies. Twenty-eight of them will accept only English meat, but most of the others specify that only New Zealand meat will be taken. Some of them include Australian and Argentine meat. It is alleged that some lower grade meats are being substituted for the New Zealand article, and Mr Mackenzie is submitting proposals to the New Zealand Government with a view to preventing this practice.
