WAITOMO CAVES.
Own Correspondent. The warm showery weather we have experienced of late has been very favourable to the growth of both grass and turnips, and feed is very plentiful. Stock in consequence are in the pink of condition. Most of the bush burns are sown down, and from all accounts good takes are the rule. The different metalling contracts are proceeding somewhat slowly, and unless we get an unusually dry autumn we shall still have to plod through mud on the main road this coming winter. A dance was held at Mr T. Kilmister's residence on the evening of 19th inst. The weather was perfect, and quite a large number attended. The floor was in splendid order the music all that could be desired, and everyone seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves. During the evening, Mr J. D. Stevenson, on behalf of the residents of the district, presented the teacher of the Ruakuri school (Miss Cherry Stilwell) with a handsome pearl pendant as a small token of the estesm in which she is held, and expressed the regret felt by all at her departure after more than two years' residence among them, and their appreciation of the interest she has taken both in the welfare and education of the children, and also in all matters pertaining to the social life of the community, and hoped that at some future time she will be again residing in the district. Mr T. Reid responded on behalf of Miss Stilwell, thanking the people of Waitomo for their kindness to her and assuring them of the many pleasant memories she would carry away with her.
At the breaking up of the school for the Easter holidays, the children presented Miss Stilwell with a fountain pen, mounted with gold band and inscription, and expressed their sorrow at parting with so kind and thoughtful a teacher.
