SANDON GRASS SEED.
The action of Barraud and Abraham, Ltd., against Alfred Stuart Hammond, a claim for £360 13a lOd, was mentioned before his Honour the Chief Justice at Palmerston North on March sth, and in accordance with a settlement made between the parties to action, Mr Baldwin, on behalf of the plaintiffs, applied to have judgment entered up for the plaintiffs for the full amounts claimed, and costs as between solicitor and client, and judgment was entered accordingly. The matter in dispute in the action arose owing to the refusal of the plaintiff to purchase Sandon rye grass seed, which has a colonial reputation as a high germinating seed, it being alleged that the seed delivered to them by the defendant was not of the germinating quality which is essential to the business of the plaintiffs' that they should have for sale for their clients. The difficulty arosi owing to an exceptional season in 1911, whan the seed from Sandon was not of • a high germinating quality. All the other growers who sold seed to Messrs Barraud and Abraham in that year agreed to have the seed shipped out of the country for sale in England, with a notification of its low germinating quality, and the settlement of this action will probably result in a similar course being followed with regard to the defendants' seed. The case was uf great importance to farmers, and it is satisfactory to note that both the grower of Sandon rye graps ;seed and the plaintiffs are ' prepared, in the interests of the farmers, to take every step to ensure that only seed of ihe high germinating character, which is characteristic of Sandon seed in a normal season, should be disposed of in this country.
