WHEY AS A PIG FOOD.
As pig feeding has been frequently found unprofitable of recent years, it is most desirable to know more of the financial returns which can be derived from the various kinds of foodstuffs which are especially connected with the industry, says the Live Stock Journal. Experiments have proved the value of skim milk in this connection, and have shown its usefulness in imparting firmness to pork and bacon, as well as in providing a good growing food. Whey is not so good, though it is a better food than might be supposed, and the Kilmarnock experiments show that its value is two-thirds that of separated milk for bacon production, and, indeed, that it is not inferior to barley meal. This is when whey is used alone, and these experiments may cause some surprise in respect to the value which has been found in this byproduct* Used by itself it was found profitable, though a much greater return was experienced when meal accompanied it. An average of the whole experiments showed a return of lib per daw for whey fed alone, which then paid Jd per gallon as well as 8s 7d per pig. If it is only worth Jd to credit the dairy with this is a very fair return, but if the price of whey should be credited at a higher rate when food goes up in price, as some contend it should be, this, of course, diminishes the profit.
