PROPOSED ARIA LOAN.
KIE KIE ROAD SLIP. INADVISABLE TO METAL. The settlers in the Aria district are taking in hand the raising of a loan for ihe purpose of metalling portions of the Kie Kie, Kumara, and Paraheka roads, and the preliminary steps have already been taken. The state of the Kie Kie road has always been a source of anxiety to the settlers, and it is recognised that a great amount of work Will be necessary before it is placed in a satisfactory condition. Reporting on the scheme, the county engineer has the following remarks: "In reference to the proposed metalling Bcheme on the Kie Kie, Kumara, and Paraheka road, I am of opinion that the portion of the Kie ] Kie road between Mr Russell's and the saddle should not be included. The whole hillside thereabouts is slipping away gradually from the watershed and taking the road bodily with it. ' It will [be impossible to maintain with any degree of permanency either grades or alignment. This will be accentuated as the roots, and stumps rot. I don't wish to damp the zeal and enterprise of the settlers concerned, but to put on what will be very expensive metal, on such an unstable foundation, is loading themselves with heavy expense and ensuring very doubtful results. I think the whole scheme should be amended to properly complete forma tion and metal worst portions of the Kumara, Paraheka, and the portion of Kie Kie road below Russell's."
