WAITOMO RIDING ROADS.
HAUTURU AND MA-NGAPOHUE,
At last month's meeting of the Waitomo County Council, a deputation waited on the council with the object of getting something done on the most important roads of the locality. At that time it was decided to get the county engineer's report on the roads, with a view to having the wishes of the settlers acceded to as far as possible. . Mr Gould, in company with Mr W. Johnston, councillor for the riding, subsequently visited inspected the roads, and the engineer at last meeting reported as follows: "In company with Cr Johnston, J inspected the Huaturu and Marigapohue roads regarding recent complaints. The settlers on the portion of the Hauturu road, east of the Caves road junction, are badly off as far as dray road access is concerned. The road with the exception of a few chains has never been widened from the original bridle track, and though settlers manage with difficulty to drive along the road, it cannot be recognised as a dray road. As the road is still under the control of the Govern ment they should be- asked to widen and complete the road. The work will be costly and would not be a fair charge against the councils' Fund account. However, in the meantime I propose spending a few pounds on improving the worst places. The same remarks also apply to the Mangapohue road. This road, however, could be widened and made decently passable for wheel traffic at much less expense."
