EXPRESS TRAINS.
SECOND SERVICE TO STOP.
Shortly after Easter the double express service between Auckland and Wellington will be discontinued during the winter months, only the former service of one express each way daily being maintained. A statement to this effect was made by the Minister for Railways.
Asked for an explanation of the decision to reduce the service, Mr Herries said he could not give any detailed information, but the traffic had not justified the maintenance of the double service. During the Chrisanas reason the three trains daily from the north and south terminal stations had been necessary to carry the traffic, and no doubt the double service would bo required during the Easter holidays. Although one through-trnin daily would be adequate for tho winter months, greater facilities would be required in the summer, and tho double service would he resumed probably early in November, and continue till Match.
Mr Herriea added that an augmented service would certainly hn necessary next summer to carry the heavy truffle that would bo induced by the Auckland Industrial Exhibition. Anticipating that an abnormally largo number of people would travel on tho railway during tho exhibition period, he had authorised an increase in the new rolling stock programme. Now passenger coaches and goods waggons were being specially built for this period,
