BOWLING.

During the progress of the last South Auckland bowling tournament, in which Te Kuiti and Hamilton representatives figured prominently, a sporting wager was entered, into by the skips of the respective teams. The losing skip was pledged to purchase trophies for the winning team. Subsequently arrangements were entered into to the effect that the trophies were to be held as challenge cups, and were to be defended by the holders upon the challenge of the los ing club. The first challenge game was played on the local green on Saturday Ist, when the following represented Hamilton: Messrs Moncur, Williams, Whyte and Gillies (skip). The Te Kuiti club was represented by Messrs Williams, Matthew, Spencer and Power (skip). The local players successfully defended the trophies, the scores being Te Kuiti 27, Hamilton 8. In the evening the visitors were entertained by the local players at the County Chambers, and an enjoyable time was spent. A challenge game for the Cochrane Ferns wa3 played on the Te Kuiti green on Saturday last, a first-year team, consising of Messrs Walsh, F. -Julian, Eothery and Boles (skip) being the challengers. The holders oc the ferns, Messrs Sutton, Lineham, Steel and A. Julian (skip) succeeded in retaining the trophies, the scores being 18 played substitute for Taylor in the fernholders' team. The movements of the local bowlers at Easter are as yet uncertain. It ia probable that a first-year team will take part in the Auckland tournament, and teams to take part in the executive and pairs matches may also be sent. However, there is a possibility ot a strong rink proceeding to PalmerBton North to take part in the tournament at that centre, and final arrangements will not be made for some days yet. It is considered that a fairly strong first-year four could be chosen from Messrs Boles, Walsh, Pattison, Julian, Rothery and Steel. There is little to choose between the players mentioned, all of them having shown good form in practice. Th 9 colts will have the opportunity of trying their strength on March 17tb, an invitation having bsen extended to them by th,e Hamilton (Hub to meet the first team of that centre on the Hamilton green.
