The Hon. T. Mackenzie, Commissioner for New Zealand, #avo a lunch to the Hon. J. Allen, at; which Sir Geo. Reid, Commonwealth High Commissioner; Sir W. C. Buchanan, M.P. for Wairarapa; Sir R. Solomon, Sir W. H. Hall-Jones, Lord Blytb, Mr Cathcart Wason, l)r Chappie, and many New Zealanders were present.
Mr Allen emphasises" the value of overseas trade to the Motherland. Without deprecating foreign trade, ho said it was better for the Motherland to rely on the trade of her own people. There had been a lot of talk about empire during the last f«nv years, and now wan the time to act. He urged that prominent politiciano should visit the overseas Dominions to learn something about the Empire. Sir W. C. Buchanan regretted the little improvement in handling meat during the last uvonty years. He admitted th~ remedy was difficult. Sir W. Harcourt, in proposing Mr Mackenzie's health, said the Government was grateful for Mr Allen'H assistance and advice in matters of defence. No Englishman would forget New Zealand's part in the Empire's defence. Ho wished Sir W. H. Hall-Joneß bon voyage.
