Newton King reports: -
For my Stratford sale on 4th inat., there was a very good yarding, most pens being filled. There was a good attendance, but generally bidding was quiet and most lines were passed in. Weaners, forward cows and bulls being the exception, competition for the latter being very keen. Prices obtained were: — Weaner Jersey heifers £3, grades 34s 6d to 37s 6d, weaner steers up to 35s 6d, mixed weaners 31s, twenty month in calf heifers £3 15s 6d, good conditioned bulls up to £9 2s 6d, to and a half year in calf heifer 3£4 10s to £4 17s 6d, aged cows 31s 6d to 41s, store cows £2 17s'to £3 12s 6d, forward and fat cows £4, 5s to £5 12s 6d. two and a half year Jersey steers £3 35s to £3 17 6d, three year bullocks £5 10s, lambs 8s 6d, f.m. ewes 7s 6d, rams from li to 2gns. On Wednesday, March sth, at Stony River yards there was a fair entry with a good attendance. Bidding, whilst not so brisk as at recent sales, was very fair, practically everyhting being cleared as follows: Holstein weaner heifers 28s to 34s 6d, small and bad coloured 15s to 225, eighteen months empty heifers £2 19s 6d to £3 8s 6d, twenty monthß in calf heifers £3 15s to £4, Holstein springing heifers £7 2s 6d, bulls £8 ss, store cows £2 8s to £3 13s, forward cows £4 5s to £4 8s 6d, fat cows, best £6 18s to £7 2s, others £5 5s to £5 16s, s.f. plough £5, horse, cart and harness £l6 ss. slip pigs 7s, small woolly lambs Ba.
HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLE,

The High Commissioner's cable, dated London March Bth, is as follows, quotations unless otherwise specified are average market prices on spot:— Mutton. —The market is quiet, with a tendency in favour of buyers in anticipation of heavy arrivals, there being 1,000,000 carcases afloat. Canterbury 6Jd, other than Canterbury 6d. Beef.—The market is firm with better demand. Stocks of New Zealand beef on hand are light. New Zealand hindquarters 3|d, fores 3±± Butter. The market is firm for New Zealand with good demand, owing to the loss of the Turakina's shipment; but the market is quiet, and prices slightly weaker for other butters. Choicest New Zealand salted 117s, unsalted 120s, Australian 110s, Argentine 109s, Danish 1335, Siberian 110s. Cheese. —The market is firm, with improved demand for best quality. The average price for the week for the finest New Zealand cheese is 61s 6d.
Hemp. The market is quiet, but holders are firm. The market is speculative. New Zealand good fair grade £34, fair £3l; April to June New Zealand good fair £34 10e, fair £3l 10s. Pn'ces are nominal. Fair current Manila on spot £34, forward shipment £35. The output from Manila for the week was 18,000 bales.
