HOUSEHOLD HINTS.

Collars and cuffs will never blister if starched on the right side.

Rugs should not be shaken, but instead hang them on a clothes line and beat them with a cane beater kept for the purpose. Flowers with woody stems will last much longer in water if stalks are scraped for about three inches up. Milk glasses should always be rinsed in cold water previous to washing in hot soapsuds if you wish them to be clean and bright. Boil a new clothes-line and then it will not twist as new rope is apt to do.

To prevent cheese from getting mouldy, wrap it in a cloth that has been dipped in vinegar and wrung as dry as possible. Keep in a cool place.

. Lamp chimneys should not be washed, as they are liable to crack after it. Clean well with soft paper, moistening it if necessary with a little methylated spirits.

Hang meat in a cool, airy place but not in a draught, for that makes it dry, and consequently hard. If you are bothered with mice, try putting mint down near their holes. They have a strong objection to the smell, and will seldom come anywhere near it.

Table linen is apt to wear in the creases. Before signs of wear appear, cut a little off one side and hem it. This will bring the creases in a different place, and save the wear. Discoloured marble can quite well be cleaned in the following way: First of all wash with soda and water, then wipe dry and apply a paste made powdered bathbrick and lemonjuice, rub it well into the discoloured parts and rinse off in clear cold water
