KEPT HER FOR HIM.
Of course it was all n mistake, but it caused Ne-wbrydo a very uncomfortable live minutes. It happens that he was a member of th? free library, and the cause Q l the misunderstanding was the regulation which allows any member wanting a certain book, provided the book is not in, to deposit a penny and secure aext turn, the librarian notifying the return of the book by sending a postcard.
Newbryde had been trying for weeksto secure one 0 f Jepson's works, and not being successful, he paid his pen ny in the usual way. In due course the card arrived, and Mrs Newbryde took it from the postman. This is what she read :
"Mr. Newbryde is informed th|4 'The Girl He Left Behind Hiia' i«. now in the library,, and will be r(tained for him until Saturday morn ing next." It was some time before Newbryde could, convince his wife that she had made an error.
