"KING GEORGE LAND."
MAWSONS' DISCOVERIES. Melbourne, Thursday.
Lord Denman (the Governor-Gene-ral) has received a wireless message via Macquarie Island and Hobarfc from Dr Mawson. The message, which is dated from Commonwealth Bay, the winter quarters of the expedition, is as follows: —
"We were successful in opening up a large area of new land to the east and west of Commonwealth Bay, and we obtained important data at a number of stations in close proximity to the. Magnetic Pole. Probably six of the staff and myself will be unavoid' ably detained here another year. Unfortunately Ninnis and Hertz both lost their lives. The others are all alive and well. Please communicate the following to His Majesty the King:— "As leader of the Australasian Antarctic expedition, I take the opportunity of the first regular wireless communication between our main Antarctic base and the other portions of your Majesty's Dominions to request permission to name a large area of newly-discovered land King George V. Land. Our most willing effortß were concentrated upon it." Lord Denman has dispatched the message to the King, and replied to Dr Mawson deploring the calamity that befell Lieut. Ninnis and Dr Hertz.
