OHURA COUNTY COUNCIL.
The monthly meeting of the Ohura County Council, was held on February 26tb. Present Crs Saudiaun (chairman), Risk, Kelly, Goldfinch, Hayward, Lyon and Currie. Mr Knight wrote on behalf of the settlers on the northern portion of the Waitewhena requesting that the approaches to the Waitewhena bridge be formed to allow them to get their wool to market. —Resolved that the engineer attend to tha work. Mangaroa and Matiere Pounds. — Resolved that Cr Risk arange with the Ohura Saleyards Company to lease their yards as a public pound, and that Cr Lyon make arrangements to have the site at Matiere pound fenced and yards erected. —The clerk was in structed to have the sites proclaimed and all other formalities complied with.
Cr Goldfinch pointed out the urgent need of connecting the Toroto and Roto roads, a distance of about 60 chains not yet widened. Settlers at present had great difficulty in negotiating the narrow track.—Resolved that the Minister for for Public Works be urged to complete the work. Proposed New Hospital District. — A plan showing the proposed boundaries was received from the Taumarunui town clerk.—After discussion it was decided on the motion of Cr Sowry, seconded by the chairman: That this council is of opinion that the proposal to form a new hospital district is premature, and object to ne included therein.
Grants to the Countv.— It was resolved to urge on the Minister of Pub lie Works to grant authority to the council for the various grants available for workß in the county.
Ohura Road Thirds.—Cr Lyon moved that the accrued thirdß on the Ohura road be scheduled for expenditure.
Dog Tax.—lt was decided that the dog tax must be paid at the office of the county, and that if not paid on or before June 30th, the amount be doubled.
Notice of Motion. Cr Hayward moved that notice of motion standing in his name be deferred until next meeting. Cr Lyon supported the motion as the mover in the matter of reducing the clerk'B salary, Cr Loveday, was absent—Held over. Public Works Department. The chairman reported that he had met Mr Donaldson, district engineer, by appointment, and various questions of interest to the council were considered. The Public Works Department intended to place the Waitewhena and Toroto road 3 in repair and hand them over to the council. The site for a bridge over the Ohura river giving access to the Opatu block had been fixed opposite Mr Blaramberg's homestead, and this work, with the widening of the Tokirima road, would be proceeded with as soon as the authority was received. In regard to the main road to Ongarue, Mr Donaldson had gone into the matter of a tram as suggested by the council, and considered that it would be to the advantage of the settlers to support the proposal. The council decided to make the Public Works Department an offer of £SOO per year as a subsidy subject to the proposals submitted meeting with their approval.—lt was decided to obtain more information and consider at a later meeting.
