The following letter has been received by Mr A. E. Robinson; of Te Kuiti, from the Under-Secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department: —"ln referencH to your letter of the 10th inst., regarding the telephone facilities in the back districts of Te Kuiti, I have the honour, by direction to inform you that there is a prospect that a direct wire will be erected between Te Awamutu and Kawhia shortly. This, if effected, will considerably shorten the circuit between Kawhia and Te Kuit : . The department provides direct circuits where Dossible, but it is unable to do so in every case. The first consideration is the giving of a telephone connection with the nearest centre." A number of Te Kuitians proceeded to Hamilton yesterday to witness the races. The local horse Salvia was defeated in the first race by Phosphorous. The cup was won by Maxwell; the hurdles went to Ambergris, while Blue Garment scored a double win in the Claudelands Handicap and Publicans. The last race of the day went to Urekehu. The meeting is being continued to-day. If you don't know that Ton'cing's Linseed Emulsion won't let you cough, well, then, you ought to. 1/6, 2/6,4/6.
