N.Z. FARMERS' UNION.
KIO KIO BRANCH Own Correspondent.
A well-attended meeting; of the local branch was held in the schoolroom last Saturday.
The minutes of tho previous meeting having been read and confirmed and a considerable quantity of general corresondence dealt wtih the vexed question of a level crossing at the Kio Kio station came up for discussion. It appeared that both the Railway Department and the County Council had been approached on the matter. The former while admitting the urgent necessity of the work declared it to be the duty of the Waitomo County Council to carry it through. The latter body atfer due consideration of the cost—.€2oo declined to act at present. As things are now the railway gates may be locked at any time so that the main road is closed. The danger of railway gates has been shown already in several instances. Drivers have been obliged to leave their teams to open tho gates, and the horses having become restive, several bolts have occurred, It was pointed out vigorously that, the. present condition of affairs was in tolerable. It was accordingly decided that a deputation consisting of the chairman and the secretary should place the matter before the Minister for Railways when ho visits Otorohanga late this month. A communication was received from the teacher of the school asking for a donation to the picnic fund. decided to set aside £3 3s for this purpose, provided the picnic bo a combined farmers' and school picnic, March 7th being mentioned as a suitable date. A deputation from the Otorohanga Chamber of Commerce now addressed the meeting on the installation of rural telephones. The speakers were fortunate in that the ground had been excellently prepared for them by a similar deputation from Te Awamutu a few weeks ago. No difficulty was experienced in in arranging for two j party wires to be connected with the IQtorohanga exchange. The matter of telephones having been satisfactorily settled the scheme Cor altering the county boundaries
