FOR THE SABBATH.

DOING GOOD. "The Christian must do good. He cannot just set his mind on saving his own soul and devote himself to being upright, moral and pure; he must think of others' needs, and connect himself with the benefactors of the city or the state in which he lives. There is no solitary ladder to heaven. The follower of Christ is bound to set himself to cure poverty, sickneßS, sadness and crime, The Christian cannot just lie down to sleep and leave all to God; for the Christian is the follower of Christ who, being one with God, never ceases to work; and inasmuch, as ye neglect the poor, the sick and the criminal, ye neglect me. The spirit of His Master will rouse him to use all means, private and public, to do good and also give him strength to pay the heavy price of self-subjection."—Canon S. A. Barrett. There are bridges to cross, and the way is long, But a purpose in life will make you strong. Keep on your lips a cheerful song, And always luok up! look up! Mr C. T. Studd, the onne famous English cricketer, has been labouring for many year a missionary in India and China. Recently Mr Studd, with three Cambridge men, had started on a mission to the heart of Africa. The natives are pagans, moat of them have never seen a white man and none of them have heard of Christ. The amalgamation of the two branches of the Methodist Church in New Zealand was brought to pass at Wellington on Thursday, February 6th, when the deed of union was signed in the Town Hall. The signatures were witnessed by his Excellency the Governor amidst tremendous enthusiasm. There can be no defence against temptation like the defence of prayer, that brings heaven itself to the rescue when the fight is hard and the issues seem doubtful. Standing in our own strength we may not be able to overcome the tempter. Standing in the strength of God we may defy every dart forged in the armoury of Satan. TABLOIDS. "At every moment of our lives we should be trying to find, not in What we differ with other people, but in what we agree with them."—Euskiti. 0 strengthen me, that while stand Firm on the rock and strong in Thee; 1 may stretch out a loving hand To wrestlers with the troubled sea. :; : Each day, each week, each month, each year is a new chance given you by God. Cease boasting of your cleverness and give God thankß for so many opportunities. The greatest loss that can befall a man is the loss of his ideals. Great thoughts give us great courage. Make the effort to do that which is best. Life is an arrow—therefore you must know What mark to aim at, how to use the bow — Then draw it to the head—and let it go. Good advice is more easily given than followed. Shakespeare and Tolstoi have been translated into thirty-three languages, Pilgrims Progress into one hundred and eleven, but the Bible, which Thomas Paine said would be "a back number" in 3906, is now being published in five hundred and thirty different languages. John Wesley said: "I know no persons living, who are so deeply conscious of their needing Christ, both as prophet, priest and king, as those who believe themselves to be cleansed from sin." True Christianity humbles —the more we grow in grace, the more meek and and submissive we become. This is the true Christ spirit. The official year book of the Wesleyan Methodist Church, recently issued, gives interesting statitsics of world wide Methodism. The chief totals are a-3 follows: Ministers 55,067; Jay preachers, 101,368; church members and probationers, at least, 9,000,000; Sunday Schools, 87,715; Sunday school officers and teachers, 862,969; scholars. 7,895,090; churches and preaching places, at least, 100,000. All these totals, with the exception of the numbers of lay preachers, show a substantial increase on the returns of last year. With the possible exception of the Lutheran Church, the Methodist Chruch is the largest Protestant Church in the world. It is certainly the largest church, Protestant or other wise, of the English race.
