A BACKBLOCKS MYSTERY. Sydney, Thursday.
William Patrick Cranston haß been committed for trial for the manslaughter of Jamea Murphy. The evidence showed that they quarrelled in a cafe. Cranston struck Murphy, who in falling hit his head on the pavement.
At the inquest on William McMillan, whose body was recovered from Kareelah Creek, near the Queensland border, the evidence showed that McMillan was a member of a party of four. The three others returned to Kareelah the day after the party left, and reported that McMillan was missing. His death resulted from a broken neck before the body entered the water. There was no evidence to show how death occurred, and an open verdict was retimed. William James has been committed for trial for shooting and murdering Ralph Albert Chambers. The evidence showed that during a row in a navvies' camp at Marulan deceased was shot while letting his vehicle through a fence. James was heard to say that he would shoot the first man coming near.
