TE KUITI RACE DAY.
A SUCCESSFUL MEETING. JOLIE FILLE WINS THE CUP SALVIA A DOUBLE WINNER. The annual race meeting under the auspices of the Te Kuiti Racing Club, was held on the Te Kumi course on Thursday. The weather wa3 fine, the sun being extremely hot, and there was no wind. The attendance was easily a record for the course, aad it is estimated that between three and four thousand people were present. From an early hour the. crowd began ,to assemble from all quarters, and when the trains arrived from Taumarunui and Frankton it was seen the attendance would be entirely satisfactory. The meeting was well supported by local people, but the percentage of visitors was exceptionally fcjarge, both Waikato and Auckland being well represented, while f r( ?™ the south Taumarunui contributed its quota of good sports. All who present expressed highly favourable opinions upn the course, the state of the track, and the general surround ings coming in for widespread approval. When the initial totalisator meeting •was held last year, the putting through the machine of the sum of £5432 was held to be a wonderful performance for the club. That the bells were ringing to some tune on Thurs day is evidenced by the fact that tne sum of £6918 was handled by the machine. An increase of almost £ISOO in the first year is a really wonderful advance, and the club has every reason to feel satisfied with the results from a financial, point of view. The gate receipts were also highly satisfactory, well over £2OO being paid for admission. The Oparure Band was in attendance, and rendered a well-appreciated programme throughout the .day. The committee and stewards all worked hard and everything passed off without a hitch. A special word of praise is due to Mr Trinnear, the secretary, who is to be complimented for the smooth wording of the detail arrangements. THE RACING. The racing was good throughout, good fields and keen contests being the order of the day. The times registeredin the various events waio good, and compare favourably with those of any otner country meeting. The programme opened with the Maiden Plate, which was won by Matawerewere in comfortable style. The Hurdle Handicap was expected to afford a good contest, the winners from Takapuna buth being on the scene. Surplus led throughout until well over the last obstacle, when Denbies put in an undeniable claim, arid scored a half length victory in excellent time. The Otorohanga Hack Handicap went to Positive, who had a comfortable win from Bonny Duon. The Te Kuiti Cup as popularly, held to be at the mere l7 of last year's victress, Jolie Fille, and this summing up proved to be correct, though Koitiropu made matters very interesting for the iavuurite. The local horse Salvia accounted for the Taumarunui Hack Handicap in good style. Flying Soult had a somewhat easy win in the Welter, and the Rohe Potae Stakes proved to be a good thing for Bluestone. The last race of the day went to the locally-owned Salvia, whose performance in winning a double in her maiden attempt was quite in keep ing with her high breeding.
