Owing to a breakdown in the machinery a considerable amount of news matter is unavoidably held over from this issue of the Chronicle. Mr J. R. Graham will shortly sell by auction a large consignment of horses from Messrs Hoult & Sons, Feilding. The date of sale and selling place will appear in the next issue of the Chronicle. Residents of the Kawa district will be glad to learn that a tender for the erection of the bridge over the Waipa river has been accepted by the Waitomo County Council, and approved by the Public Works Department. Messrs Scott and Forsyth are the successful tenders for the work, and the timber is already on order. A Press Association message from Wellington states that Major the Hon. R. H. Collins, general staff officer at Palmerston North, has been appointed adju-tant-general, succeeding Colonel Wolfe, who has been appointed inspector of rifle clubs, drill halls, and rifle ranges. Mr R. C. Jordan, Licensed Surveyor, gives notice that he has removed to Zobel's Buildings, situated in Rora Street, Te Kuiti. The officials of the Te Kuiti Racing Club have endeavoured to set a high standard with respect to the conduct of their fixture and freedom from complaints or protests has been the result. Some surprise was occasioned at the non-appearance of a horse entered for the hurdle race since it was known the horse had come to Te Kuiti. As a matter of fact the horse was entered by the wife of a disqualified person and was thus ineligible to start. Before the race the position was intimated to the trainer of the horse and the trouble was avoided. Had the horse started and won the race there is little doubt endless trouble would have been caused, '
Attention is drawn to an advertisement appearing in our columns this issue asking for the rendering of accounts up to Friday next against the Te Kuiti Racing Club. All the accounts must be rendered in detail.
An unfortunate accident occurred at the conclusion of the races on Thursday, though fortunately consequences were not serious. A buggy driven by Mr E. C. Falwasser was precipitated into the river in consequence of the horse becoming fractious. The occupants of the buggy jumped out before the drop took place and escaped a wetting. The horse and vehicle were got out after considerable trouble, little damage being done excep to the harness. The road from Te Kuiti to the racecourse has now been metalled throughout, and on Thursday the going was found to be rather rough for quick transit. However it is highly satisfactory to see that one of the worst pieces of road in the district has been made safe and fit for traffic at all seasons. The fact will be appreciated much more by the settlers in winter than will the present roughness be deplored by patrons of the races and show. The manner in which the totalisator investments were handled at the races 011 Thursday was the subject of favorable comment by those who understand the amount of work entailed on the machine. Mr Mark and his assistants were well up to time, and although the amount put through the machine was an increase of fifteen hundred pounds on the previous year's total everything worked smoothly. Fortunately an addition had been made to the totalisator house prior to the meeting, and judging from appearances further additions will require to be made in the near future.
