PIO PIO.

Own Correspondent,

There is an air of activity throughout this district generally and progress is apparent on all hands. The suppliers to the local dairy factory are exceeding all expectations and the prospects of the industry are of the brightest. The output for the factory is now about three tons weekly and this IB more than double the quantity which was bandied at a similar period last season. The contributing causes to the satisfactory increase are a larger number of suppliers, and to the fact that the settlers have been testing and culling their herds freely. One supplier informed me that his supply to the factory this season with three cowb less than last year was a thousand pounds of more butter fat up to the end of December. This satisfactory result he attributed to testing and culling and he is only one among many who have had the same experience. I understand several suppliers have commenced testing for themselves, and every season should see the practice grow until it is a recognised feature of every dairy farm.

The various businesses in the township show healthy signs of expansion. Mesws Green and Colebrook have the material on ths ground for the extension pf their premises, another business man talks of erecting several cottageß. This should be a boon to the place as house accommodation is at present unprocurable. The village blacksmith is working night and day and has installed an extra fire to cope with increased trade. Our baker is keeping exceptionally busy, and is giving excel'ent satisfaction. With the roads in decent order he would have his resources taxed to the utmost as settlers are orly too glad to be relieved of their own bread making. There is a considerable amount of road work proceeding throughout the district, but the main road is not being metalled as quickly as one would like to see it. However the County Council's action in declining to accept the responsibility for maintenance before the metalling is completed is generally commended.
