TE KUITI BOROUGH COUNCIL.

A meeting of the Te Kuiti Borough Council was held on Monday evening. There were present—His Worship the Mayor (Mr E. H. Hardv), and Crs Lcsk, Juliaui', Jones, Walsh. Somerville, Falwasser, Tammadge, Lever and Graham.

New Councillor. —Cr Graham made the customary declaration and took his seal at the council table.—He was welcomed by the Mayor on behalf ot the council. Sewer Connections. —Cr Lusk wished to know if any provision had been made for private people to get their houses connected with the sewer, in cases where the people were prepared to pay for the connection. He suggested that as money was tight people who were in a position to pay for their connections should be encouraged to do so.—Cr Jones said he thought if it was possible to get connected now the fact should be advertised. Cr Somerville said he thought the council should be able to raise the money by way of overdraft to do this work. As it was compulsory for householders in the sewage area to connect the the council should be in a position to carry out the work. He thought the Finance Committee should go into the matter of ways and means. —Cr Jones agreed with Cr Somerville, and advocated that the Finance Committee should meet more frequently. A letter was read from Mr 0. Le Page, contractor for Dr Zobel's buildings, requesting that the sewer connections should be allowed to be put in.—Cr' 'Walsh pointed out that the septic tank was not yet completed, and it would be dangerous to have connections made unfit the tank was in working orde-.— Eventually it was decided that the connection should be allowed to be made, the engineer explaining that the pipes could be sealed up so that they could not be used until the septic tank was completed. Hire of Trolly.—Messrs E. Porter and Co. wrote enclosing a letter from Mr L. G. P. Spencer, claiming 2s 6d a day Jor th« hire of a trolly used at the stone crusher. Messrs Porter and \jo. explained that their contract . provided for placing the crusher on the ground, the council to find all material. They requested the council to deal with the applica-

tioD.— said he was ( not aware until Saturday that the trolly belong to Mr Spencer. He had used the crusher several times. The matter was left to the engineer to arrange with Mr Spencer. Slip on Rata Street.—Mr G. Arrowsmith wrote concerning a slip on Rata street and suggesting that steps be taken to cope with it.—The engineer said timber for the retaining wall was ordered and the work would proceed as soon as the material was available. Te Kumi Water Supply.—ln reply to Cr Palwasser the engineer said the pipes for supplying water to Te Kumi were on order and the work would be proceeded with when the pipes arrived. Lighting Poles.—Messrs A. and T. Burt wrote requesting permission to lay the poles for the electric light installation in the various streets without having lights placed on the same.—Permission granted at the contractor's risk.

Fire Brigade.—Mr W. Edgar wrote resigning his position as superintendent of the brigade as from January 13th. —Accepted. Edward Street. —A petition was received from a number of residents on Edward street, requesting that the drain should x be extended.—Referred to the engineer. Works Committee.—Cr Graham was appointed a member of the Works Committee. Sanitary Der.ot. Cr Somerville was authorised to make arrangements for the fencing of the sanitary depot Engineer's Report.—lsl chains of forming, spalling and metalling is now done on King street, and is now being roiled and blinded Formation and spalling is going on in Hill street and will be pushed forward as rapidly aa possible, and as far as the money at present available will allow. Formation work has been carried out in Ngatai street, and with the exception of trimming up is completed. When through settlement has taken place this will be metalled. The side drains in George street, Ward street, Edward street, Duke street, and other places have been cleared. I am opening up the quarry off Matai street for the purpose of getting spalls for foundation work. This will save the stone in the present quarry or broken metal only. . With the money available under the old loan I propose commencing the formation of Rora street at the northern end. At present it is in a bad condition and requires attention. The rejects from the crusher I am using for filling up holes and forming foundation in Tammadge street. This will be consolidated with the roller and metalled over with broken metal. Now the river is again low enough I am intending to blind Tawa street and Mangaorino road, where required, with river gravel. Previous to commencing work on the formation of Rora street lam desirous of making all connections between the-sewer and the boundaries of sections, and should be glad if arrange ments can be made for the necessary money (say £1000) to enable me to have *he work carried out as early as possible. . The following has been the expenditure during the month: King street west £B2 13s 3d, Hill street £3l Is, Ngatai street £22 13s, Tammadge street £8 5s 7d, Te Kumi road £3 Is lid, general maintenance watering, etc. £22 3s 6d. The holidays intervening have considerably delayed the progress of works. In consequence of the unsatisfactory plant and a visit of inspection made on Friday last by a number of councillors; I wired to Melbourne for prices of a rotary crusher, also to Auckland and Napier re portable engine, but up to the present 1 have not had replies to any of my enquiries. As I previously pointed out, in order to

push on with the works and utilise the steam roller for its legitimate purpose, provision must be made where by a sufficient quantity of stone can be supplied to keep thin roller in constant work on rolling metal, consolidating foundations, etc. I am preparing specifications and contracts for all works under the new loan pro-, posals, which can be carried out by contract in order to have them ready to* calling tenders as soon as mone" is" available.—S. B. DODGE, Borough Engineer.
