A DISMASTED SHIP.
STRUCK BY LIGHTNING. Received January 7, 8.15 p.m. By Telejsraph.—Press Association.—Copyright Sydney, Tuesday. The Chilian barque Belafst, which sailed coal laden from Newcastle on December 3rd, to Callao, has been towed in to port crippled. Eight hundred mileß from Newcastle on the December 15th the vessel was struck by lightning and the fore top-gallant and main royal masts were splintered and the other masts damaged. The Belfast has returned for repairs.
It is accepted here that the Belfast .was the dismasted vessel the Thora reported. After being struck by lightning the Belfast's compasses and chronometers were useless for twelve hours, and the vessel was at the mercy of howling gale. The position was perilous and the crew for a time were in a state of panic.
