King Country Chronicle SATURDAY, DEC. 28, 1912 "A HAPPY NEW YEAR."

That hope which springs eternal in the human breast impels mankind to live largely in the future, and the greeting which springs spontaneously to utterance at this period is the timehonoured wish for a happy and prosperous New Year. In early youth the wish is lightly expessed and lightly taken but with advancing years the message is garbed in a deeper signicfiance, and to the mid-dle-aged it means more than to the youthful. However, apart from age, or creed, or modifying circumstance whatsoever, we wish all our readers moat sincerely a "Happy and Prosperous New Year." There are times when wishes, however well meant, are tendered with j

yet been out lot to chronicle a hesitating wish, and in the present instance the future looks bright for all. The passing of, the old and the beginning of the new is recognised as one of the chief milestones in the pathway of life. At that period plana are formed and resolutions recorded which materially affect individual action, and as the person who pauses to consider is usually animated by a desire to improve on past performances the beneficial influence of the season is manifest. The mellowing influence of the festive season is everwyhere apparent.. One meets friends and acquaintances, and even enemies, with a different feeling. Life becomes leßs strenuous, and he is indeed a Pilistine who can remain cold and unaffceted in the atmosphere of geniality created by

the desire of his fellows to drive dull care awav. The healthy optimism which impells us to live in the future is largely guided and directed by the consideration which is customarily directed to the past at New Year time. Upon the result of our actions for the past year are founded our resolutions for the future, and as each milestone is passed we prepare to face the New Year fortified with the experience of the past. Our district has progressed steadily daring the past year, and indications point to an equally progressive time ahead. We trust that a record year of prosperity an *, happiness for all lies in the lap of 1913.
