LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP.
ENGLISHMAN TOO FAST AND SKILFUL. WINS ON POINTS. By Telegraph.—Press Association.—Copyright London, Monday. The match between Hughie Mehegan, the Victorian boxer, and Freddie Walsh, of England, for the lightweight championship of the British Empire and £IOOO a-side, was won by Welsh on points at the end of twenty rounds. Welsh showed great pace and judgment and had the best of matters throughout, though he slackend in the eleventh, telfth and thirteenth rounds, when Mehegan was aggressive. Welsh regained his pace in the succeeding rounds, and though Mehegan always had a dangerous punch, Welsh outmanoeuvred him both in the close and long range fighting. Mehegan was nonplussed by his opponent's speed. He made great attempts to secure a knockout in the nineteenth round, but could not land a punch.
