The Christmas Tree in aid _of the Presbyterian Church was held in Turner's Hall on last week, and from the time that the hall was officially opened by Mr Wilson, M.P , it was packed with people. A huge Christmas Tree was fastened in the body of the hall and was literally loaded with toys and presents, there being over three hundred articles ticketed. There were a number of competitions held for various articles, such as cushions specially dressed dolls, weights of sheep and lamb, etc. The public were in spending humour, and the building fund will benefit considerably. In the evening a number of children, suitably attired, gave flag drill and marching, kindergarten songs. "Beauty and the Beast" was remarkably well performed by the children, who entered into the spirit of the play and carried it through without a hitch. Mrs Stewart and Miss Strahan had charge of a pretty looking sweets stall; Mrs Morley took care of the soft drinks; Mrs Elliott presided over the work and doll sta.l; Mesdames Bell, Horniblow and Simpson put in a heayv day at the refreshment stall; the Christmas tree ana competitions were in charge of Mesdames Furber, Whyte, Wallace, Gregg, Ashby and Messrs Gregg, Bell, Cox. Strahan, and Mitchell. Competitions were won by Mrs Petit, Mrs Osmond, Misses Disher, Morley and Miller. The weight of the lamb presented by Mr Gregg was 671b and Mr Morley won it with GSjUbs. The weight of the sheep presented by Mr Mitchell was llSlbs, Mr Foster winning one prize by guessing UTAbls, and 'Mr T. Cumpstone another by guessing 1171bs. Mr Geo. Allwright drew plenty of entries for his nail driving and sawing competitions, which were won by Mr Wilson, M.P , and Messrs Horniblow and Furber. Mr Wilson afterwards sold a number of articles [for the committee. The gross takings amounted to about £52 and the expenses roughly would be about £lO.
