WORLD-WIDE NOTES.
BIRD'S-EYE PHOTOGRAPHS. A remarkable method of making bird's-eye photographs is by the use of "gun camara," which is shot several feet ; into the air from the top of a standard, in the head of which is an explosive chamber. The camera is set to expose from one to ten seconds after the explosion, when it reaches its full height. It must be caught in a net when it comes down to prevent it from being smashed.
£160,000,000 INDUSTRY
A point of great interest is the manifold values of the by-products of the cotton industry. The cotton Qbre is chiefly used for the manufacture of cloth, while the by-products are used for many different purposes. For instance, the portion of the cotton fibre that remains en the seed (the lint, as it is called) is -taken off in the manufactures incident to the use of the seed, and is used for a variety of purposes. It is sold at much lower rate than the other, and used for stuffing pillows, horse-collars and cushions, and, strange to say, for adulterating shoddy. The idea of shoddy being adulterated is somewhat amusing, but that is a fact. It is also used for the manufacture of guncotton and a number of other purposes. You are all familiar with the uses of the seed itself the manufacture of oil, and the value of the hulls and cakes for feeding purposes. So that We have here an industry which represents in its total value more than £160,000,000 in America. FANS AS FLY SCREENS. An enterprising 'business man in Mobile, U.S.A., has installed a ceiling fan over the entrance to his store to prevent flies from coming in. He has found that this form of fly screen is very effective, and does away with the bother of having a screen door for his patrons to open and slam shut. Heretofore flics would enter when the door was opened, and would collect in the display windows, making it necessary to clean the windows a,nd the display objects frequently. Now he has "no such trouble. Otheil business men are adopting this sim pie expedient.
CAUSE OF RHEUMATISM
Many physicians l.elievc that rheumatism is the result o' over-feeding, followed by putrefactive changes in the foodstuffs',in the alimentary canal; there the action of certain bacteria produces specific toxic (poison) substances which, when introduced into the blood, cause a deviation from the normal oxidation process, thus causing the condition that is designated rheumatic. In the majority of instances, says a medical correspondent it is probably due to eating too much of the vegetable class of foods ; in other cases it is the result of eating too much meat. ELECTRIFIED PUPILS THE CUTEST. Electrified and ozonised houses are likely to be an improvement of the near future. On the recommendation of Professor Svante Arhenius, 25 children in a Stockholm school are placed in a classroom that is kept charged with electricity, and 25 other children of the same health, height, weight, &c, are placed in another room of identical size and condition. Although complete results have not yet been reached, it has been already affirmed that physical and menial development have been greater among the electrified pupils than among the others.
