MINISTER FOR JUSTICE.

DEPUTATIONS AT TE AWAMUTU.

During the short stay of the Minisat Te Awamutu on Monday, en route to the Waikarea prison reformatory, i the Hon. Mr Herdman was waited on by Messrs von Sturmer and Warburton, as a deputation from the Chamber of Commerce, desiring the appointment of additional Justices of the Peace. Mr Herdman pointed out that he had already appointed about ? hundred, and that Cabinet was at present considering a number of applications. If a list of some three or four reputable persons was at once sent in to the department'he would see that the apnointments were made. Mr A. W. Jones, on behalf of the Pirongia improvement Society, made the same request, stating that presidents had to come to Te Awamutu, eight miles distant, if they wished for the services of a J.P. Mr Herdman made a reply similar to that given to the Chamber of Commerce. Mr Teasdale applied on behalf of the Kawa settlers for facilities to be granted for metalling the six miles of road from Kawa station to the reformatory, and pointed out to the Minister that the settlers had already agreed to contribute £3OO towards the cost. Mr Herdman stated that he would have much pleasure in bringing Mr Teasdaie's application under the notice of the Minister for Public Works.

Mr Clements applied for a road to his section at the back of Mount Kakepuku, which had taken up some nine years ago. Mr Herdman pointed out that this was a matter for the Minister for Lands or the Minister for Public Works.
